Today, the Coalition Government announced its strategy to have “the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015”.
A good article on the pros and cons can be found here:
The BBC TV commentary can be found here (with a video interview with Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport).

At the same time, Radio 4 presenter, James Naughtie made a complete gaff of presenting Jeremy Hunt. More here from the Guardian:

And here is more from Radio 4 – with a good analysis of what the Strategy is all about

And the Guardian followed-up with a more critical analysis of the Strategy here:

I leave it for readers to decide what they think about the Strategy…..but whatever your conclusions, please continue to vote for Goudhurst. We have gone down the National Rankings by five places in the past 48 hours….so we need all the votes we can muster to beat Brenchley and stay at the top of the North Downs league!

Somerset, BET is being deployed using builpc funds in multiple locations in Scotland (Scotnet/LEADER) and I also heard there was a deployment in the Forest of Dean (Glos First, not the BDUK pilot). Whether the UK is best in Europe depends on how it is measured. There are a suprisingly large number of locations and organisations in the UK where people are putting together business plans for fiber, but it is really too early to say how these will work out.
